Baroque Dance Workshop with Philippa Waite
Saturday, March 16, 2013
Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church
1329 Seventh Avenue, San Francisco
We are delighted to host the internationally-renowned
choreographer, performer and teacher of Baroque dance,
Philippa Waite for a Baroque Dance Workshop.
Ms. Waite studied with Wendy Hilton and taught for her at the annual
Baroque Music and Dance Workshops at Stanford University. Ms. Waite is
currently guest teacher of Period Movement and Dance at the Royal Welsh
College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
She is Artistic Director of Consort de Danse Baroque and as such
choreographs in the Baroque style for the company's productions; she also
teaches, performs and gives lecture-demonstrations throughout the UK
and abroad.
The workshop will include instruction in some of the basic dance steps
and arm motions in the main Baroque dance rhythms: bourée & menuet in the morning session and sarabande & gigue in the afternoon. Experienced students will be taught more complex steps required for ballroom and theatre dances. Extracts from choreographed and extant notated dances may be taught. However, the emphasis will be on the style, technique and performance of the dances, and not on the ability to memorise them.
Schedule:
8:30-9:00 am - Sign-in
9:00 am-12:30 pm (9-9:30 Warm-Up, 9:30-12:30 Class Begins)

highlight some of the dance rhythms found in a typical "classical suite".

What to Wear?
Please wear loose comfortable clothing and flexible shoes. If you have a selection of dance shoes, a flat pair or a pair with small heels is preferable to a pair with high heels (i.e. jazz rather than character shoes). Women's high-heeled ballroom dance shoes are not suitable. New students without suitable dance shoes are absolutely welcome. You might want to try either plimsolls, running/athletic shoes (though less grip is preferable), or an extra pair of thick socks that you don't mind getting dusty.

Dance Early & Ancient
Our Dance Early & Ancient initiative began in March 2012 with
our sponsorship of a day-long Baroque Dance Workshop lead by
the internationally-renowned dancer, teacher and choreographer
Philippa Wiate of Consort de Danse Baroque (UK)
(see below for upcoming dance workshops).
Ms. Leanna Sharp was selected to head up this initiative and
began training dancers in the baroque and renaissance styles;
Ms. Sharp also provides original choreography to San Francisco
Renaissance Voices (CLICK HERE to view Ms. Sharp's bio). Our dancers provide dance to our more theatrical productions and our opera series Opera Early & Ancient as well as performing a dedicated dance program during our season.
Dance Early & Ancient made their professional debut at our "Concert from the Court of Kangxi" performance at the 2012 Berkeley Festival and Exhibition of Early Music performing a pavanne and menuet (pictured).
Renaissance & Baroque Dance is LOW IMPACT & both workshops are designed for the novice & experienced dancer - EVERYONE is invited!
