The musical liturgical drama, The Play of Daniel, written by students at the
Beauvais Cathedral in France some time between 1227-1234 is one
of the earliest examples of what we now call opera. Its poetic text
closely follows the story of the biblical prophet Daniel at the court
of the Persian king Belshazzar and is filled with satraps, soldiers,
angels... and of course lions.
Performed semi-staged with Medieval instrumentation, for our production of
this Medieval jewel we are joined by members of our
Dance Early & Ancienttroupefor anexciting ending
to our ninth season - and a great show for the entire family!

All Saints Daywith a performance ofTomás Luis de Victoria’s
(1548-1611) hauntingly beautiful Misa O Quam Gloriosum
(O How Glorious is the KingdomMass) including his motet of the same
name upon whichthe mass isbased with other music by
Ascanio Trombetti, William Byrd,Juan Esquivel and others.
Unlike his more prolificcontemporaries Victoria focused on composing
music thatwas liturgical and devotional. This parody mass, writtenin
the mixolydian mode, perfectly illustrates this and is considered one
of his best being described by the British musicologist Donald Tovey as"one of the most perfect ever written." We are delighted to be joined byguest conductor Don Scott Carpenter(pictured) of American Bach Soloists.

The secular musical form known as the madrigal took Europe by storm during the sixteenth century. In the madrigal, the composer attempted to express the emotion contained in each line, and sometimes individual words, of a celebrated poem, frequently the poetry of Petrach. In Italy, the madrigal was the most important secular musical form of its time and madrigal composers were held in public adoration akin to cultstatus. Come find out what kindled the passion of RenaissanceItaly with this concert featuring the exquisitely chromatic and
ardently avant-guard music ofCarlo Gesualdo (1566-1613)and masterpieces from the hand of the ultimate word-painter, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643).
